Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

Hope you are doing well.

I am writing to you regarding a recently posted job vacancy at "The Patel" restaurant, Toronto.

Hopefully you remember me! My name is Aman and we met last month during our plane journey to Vancouver. You were sitting next to me on seat 10A and we had a very informative discussion.

During our conversation you have shared information about your chain of restaurants and one of the locations is in Toronto. I would like to apply for the position of Assistant Manager which has been recently posted on a career website.

As you know, I have completed my Masters in Business Management, this would be a great opportunity for me to learn from the best. Adding to my educational background, I posses some of the important skills which every industry would need in a candidate such as accountability, honesty, punctuality, calmness and adaptability. I can go above and beyond to get work done on time.

I have attached my resume for your reference.

Hoping for a positive response and meeting you soon.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context, specified the role of Assistant Manager, and provided relevant reasons for your suitability by linking your academic background to the required soft skills. The tone is appropriate for a professional yet semi-formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the context of the meeting, the job application, and finally the closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'During our conversation' and 'Adding to my educational background' effectively to link your thoughts. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'informative discussion', 'educational background', and 'above and beyond' are used accurately. There is a minor spelling error ('posses' should be 'possess'), but this does not impede communication. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary related to job applications and business management. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced professional terminology to add further precision to your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. For example, the sentence 'As you know, I have completed my Masters in Business Management, this would be a great opportunity...' contains a minor comma splice; it would be better as two sentences or joined with a semicolon. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free and clear. Your use of verb tenses is consistent and accurate, and punctuation is generally handled well, which ensures that your message is conveyed without ambiguity.
