Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing well.
I am writing to you regarding a recently posted job vacancy at "The Patel" restaurant, Toronto.
Hopefully you remember me! My name is Aman and we met last month during our plane journey to Vancouver. You were sitting next to me on seat 10A and we had a very informative discussion.
During our conversation you have shared information about your chain of restaurants and one of the locations is in Toronto. I would like to apply for the position of Assistant Manager which has been recently posted on a career website.
As you know, I completed my Masters in Business Management, this would be a great opportunity for me to learn from the best. Adding to my educational background, I possess some of the important skills which every industry would need in a candidate such as accountability, honesty, punctuality, calmness and adaptability. I can go above and beyond to get work done on time.
I have attached my resume for your reference.
Hoping for a positive response and meeting you soon.
Thank you
Yours sincerely,
Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (plane journey to Vancouver, seat 10A), specify the desired role (Assistant Manager), and provide relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your academic background and personal attributes. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and context to the job application and your qualifications. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'During our conversation' and 'Adding to my educational background' to link your thoughts. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'job vacancy', 'informative discussion', and 'educational background' are used correctly. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks a degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language is precise enough to convey your message effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. There are a few minor slips, such as 'During our conversation you have shared' (should be 'shared' or 'had shared') and 'possess some of the important skills which every industry would need' (slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall grammatical control is strong enough to support clear expression.
