Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing well.
I am writing to you regarding a recently posted job vacancy at "The Patel" restaurant, Toronto.
Hopefully you remember me! My name is Aman and we met last month during our plane journey to Vancouver. You were sitting next to me on seat 10A and we had a very informative discussion.
During our conversation you shared information about your chain of restaurants and one of the locations is in Toronto. I would like to apply for the position of Assistant Manager which has been recently posted on a career website.
As you know, I completed my Master's in Business Management; this would be a great opportunity for me to learn from the best. Adding to my educational background, I possess some of the important skills which every industry would need in a candidate such as accountability, honesty, punctuality, calmness and adaptability. I can go above and beyond to get work done on time.
I have attached my resume for your reference.
Hoping for a positive response and meeting you soon.
Thank you
Yours sincerely,
Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context (plane journey to Vancouver, seat 10A), identified the specific role (Assistant Manager), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your academic background and professional traits. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and reminder of the meeting to the job application and personal qualifications. Cohesive devices such as 'During our conversation', 'Adding to my educational background', and 'As you know' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'informative discussion', 'educational background', and 'above and beyond' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be elevated further to reach a higher band by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or industry-specific terminology related to restaurant management. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the tone remains consistently professional throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used complex sentences effectively, such as 'During our conversation you shared information about your chain of restaurants and one of the locations is in Toronto.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The control over verb tenses is consistent, particularly when referring to past events and current intentions. The writing is clear and error-free for the most part, showing a high level of grammatical control.
