Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to remind you that I offered me a possible job in one of your restaurants.

We met at YYZ Airport in Toronto last month during a plane journey. We had the same number of seats, and you sat next to me. In other words, we did conversation with each other during this journey, and you told me about your restaurants that requried a job assistant.

In addition, I am keenly interested in restaurant jobs because recently, I did my hotel management, so I need tons of experience for getting good job opportunities. It would be a great chance for me, if I get job as a chef because I have great culinary skills and know about various kind of food from different nations.

Furthermore, as I earlier mentioned, I need this job not for only getting experience but also for running my own business in the future as well.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Sunpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: reminding the recipient of the meeting, stating the desired job, and explaining your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your culinary skills, you could have provided a more specific example of a dish or a particular cuisine you specialize in to make your application more persuasive. The opening sentence contains a factual error regarding who offered the job, which slightly confuses the context of the letter. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'In other words' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the meeting details and the job application could be smoother. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the first paragraph where you state 'I offered me a possible job', which is confusing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culinary skills', 'opportunities', and 'management'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that hinder precision. For example, 'we did conversation' is unnatural; 'we had a conversation' would be correct. 'Requried a job assistant' is also slightly awkward phrasing. You rely on some repetitive structures and basic vocabulary, such as 'good job' and 'great chance'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to remind you...' and 'It would be a great chance for me, if I get job...'. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I offered me' (should be 'you offered me'), 'did my hotel management' (should be 'completed my hotel management course'), and 'various kind of food' (should be 'various kinds of food'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the letter. Increasing your control over articles and verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
