Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested in the opportunity you provided me. You set a very positive impression in our meet.

I am really very glad to contact you. I am Mr. Sam, I meet with you in a recent plane journey. I sat next to you and we had conversation where I understand you owns a chain restaurants. You also suggested me to contact you about the possible job in one of your restaurants.

I did master's in management and I also have an experience of five years in restaurants as a manager. I thought my profile is strong fit a good position in your restaurant as a Senior manager. I am truly interested for the designation of senior manager.

With this, I would also like to mention that I owned a franchise of a hotel also. I thought I am well skilled for the position of senior manager in your restaurant because of long and nice experience in the same line.

I hope I shared all the relevant details you required to access my profile. With this I attached my resume. I appreciate for your time and opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

Eric

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified the desired role of Senior Manager, and provided relevant background information regarding your qualifications and experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear sir' is slightly generic; using the businessman's name would have been better. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail for the recipient to understand your professional background and interest in the position. The letter maintains a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. There is a progression of ideas from the initial reminder of the meeting to the specific job request and finally the supporting qualifications. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'I' to start sentences and the phrase 'With this' to transition between ideas. While the paragraphing is effective, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and subordinating conjunctions to create a more natural, cohesive text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use professional terms such as 'designation', 'franchise', and 'resume'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'You set a very positive impression' (should be 'made'), 'I meet with you' (should be 'met'), and 'in the same line' (should be 'in the same industry'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated professional collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. For example, 'I understand you owns' should be 'I understood you owned', and 'I thought my profile is strong fit' should be 'I think my profile is a strong fit'. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions throughout the text. While these errors rarely cause confusion, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent tense usage and article placement will help improve your accuracy.
