Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to follow-up on our conversation during flight from Dhaka to Cumilla last Friday, when you suggested me a job in your restaurant. You gave me your visiting card and told me to contact if I am interested. I am working in my current office for almost four years, and lately I was thinking about exploring different jobs.

I would like to apply for a post in Purchasing department. I have previous experience in tender management which will be helpful for working in purchasing.

I have studied Finance in a reputed university and obtained a bachelors degree. In addition, I have received advanced training on business analysis and risk management. Both these topic have integral relation with purchasing activities.

Therefore, I would be grateful if you give me a chance to work in your restaurant. I believe you will be satisfied with my performance.

Yours faithfully

Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the meeting context (flight from Dhaka to Cumilla), specify the desired role (Purchasing department), and provide relevant reasons for your suitability (finance background and tender management experience). The tone is appropriate for a professional letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills would benefit his particular restaurant chain, as the current explanation is somewhat brief. However, all requirements are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction to your qualifications and finally to your request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Therefore' to link your points. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, you could vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'tender management', 'risk management', and 'integral relation' show an ability to use topic-specific terminology. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'suggested me a job' (should be 'suggested that I apply for a job') and 'working in my current office' (more naturally 'working in my current role'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'during flight' should be 'during the flight', and 'Both these topic have' should be 'Both these topics have'. Additionally, 'I am working... for almost four years' should be in the present perfect continuous tense ('I have been working'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over verb tenses and articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
