Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Patel,

I hope this finds you well. Myself, Keertan, I am the same guy who you met a few months ago, if you remember then we both traveled in the same Air Canada plane heading from oshawa to Alberta and fortunately I sat beside your seat where we had some interesting talks about movies and sports. Subsequently, you have shared your contact number for any assistance. Today, I need a favour from you that I am in need for a part-time job I am writing to express my interest in one of the possible job at your Culture Crust restaurant.

I would really appreciate to get a job at your restaurant for the chef postion. For the same, I had a previous experience at a famous restaurant Toppers pizza where I was at the chef position.

It would be pleasure for me to work at your restaurant as my prevoius job is aligning all the requirements that you want for your restaurant. I hope I would be the perfect candidate for this job.

I hope to hear from you soon. Should you require any further details, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Keertan Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: reminding the recipient of the meeting, stating the desired job, and explaining suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter, although the opening is slightly informal. The ideas are relevant, though the explanation of suitability could be more detailed to fully develop the argument for why the candidate is a perfect fit. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the response effectively communicates the writer's intent to the recipient.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'I hope' and 'for the same'. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the meeting details and the job request could be smoother. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'myself, Keertan' and 'I am in need for a part-time job'. While the range is sufficient to address the prompt, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the letter. Spelling is generally accurate, with only minor slips like 'prevoius'. The word choice is functional but lacks the flexibility expected at higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'you have shared your contact number' (should be 'you shared') and 'I would really appreciate to get a job' (should be 'I would really appreciate getting a job'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over them is inconsistent.
