Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing to contact you about a job opportunity in one of your restaurant, which you mentioned when we met recently during a plane journey.
I hope you remember that I was sitting right next to you, when we were travelling from Delhi to Toronto by Air Canada last week. I am glad that I got a chance to know you personally during the journey.
I am inclined to work in food business which involves day-to-day customer interaction. I am interested in a management position which will provide me an opportunity to prove my management skills.
I have worked in McDonalds for one year serving both at frontdesk taking orders and assisting back team members in food preparation. I believe my previous experience in customer service and food processing would prove to be an asset for such kind of a job.
I hope you will consider me deserving for a position in your restaurant, and I will look forward for your reply.
Kind regards,
Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (Delhi to Toronto flight), specify your interest in a management position, and provide relevant background regarding your experience at McDonald's. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why your specific skills (e.g., leadership or conflict resolution) would be particularly beneficial to his specific chain of restaurants, rather than just stating you have experience. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing to', 'I hope you remember', and 'I believe'. While the structure is sound, the use of linking words is somewhat mechanical. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect your sentences more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'Given my background in...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunity', 'management position', and 'customer interaction'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'food business' (should be 'food and beverage industry') and 'back team members' (should be 'back-of-house staff' or 'kitchen staff'). Additionally, there is a small error in 'one of your restaurant' (should be plural 'restaurants'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered sophisticated or highly precise. Expanding your range of professional terminology would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I will look forward for your reply' (should be 'look forward to your reply') and the missing plural 's' in 'one of your restaurant'. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You show good control over sentence construction, but to move into the higher bands, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and preposition usage.
