Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to inquire about a job opportunity in one of your restaurants, which you mentioned when we met recently during a plane journey.

I hope you remember that I was sitting right next to you when we were travelling from Delhi to Toronto by Air Canada last week. I am glad that I got a chance to know you personally during the journey.

I am inclined to work in the food business which involves day-to-day customer interaction. I am interested in a management position which will provide me an opportunity to not only show my management skills but also to prove my leadership qualities.

While I was studying hospitality in the university, I worked in McDonald's for one year serving both at front desk taking orders and assisting back team members in food preparation. I believe my relevant education and previous experience in customer service and food processing would prove to be an asset for such kind of a postion.

I hope you will consider me deserving for a position in your restaurant, and I will look forward for your reply.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (Delhi to Toronto flight), specify your interest in a management role, and provide relevant background regarding your hospitality studies and previous experience at McDonald's. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'While I was studying' and 'I believe my relevant education', which connect your past experience to your current application. The paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow is natural and professional throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'inquire', 'opportunity', 'inclined', and 'asset'. There is a minor collocation error in the phrase 'assisting back team members', which would be more naturally expressed as 'assisting back-of-house staff'. Additionally, 'food processing' is slightly inaccurate in this context; 'food service' or 'culinary operations' would be more precise. However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication and you successfully use a range of vocabulary to convey your professional background.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free and demonstrate good control over tense and syntax. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I will look forward for your reply', which should be 'I look forward to your reply', and 'such kind of a postion', which is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these occasional minor errors, your grammar is generally accurate and supports the formal tone of the letter well.
