Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to inquire about a job opportunity in one of your restaurants, which you mentioned when we met recently during a plane journey.

We recently shared a flight from Delhi to Toronto by Air Canada last saturady, during which I thoroughly enjoyed hearing aboutyour inspiring business journey. I am grateful for your generous offer to consider me for a postion within your chain of restaurants.

I am keen to work in the food business which involves day-to-day customer interaction and high standards of food preparation. I am interested in a junior management position which will provide me an opportunity to not only show my management skills but also to prove my leadership qualities.

While I was studying hospitality in the university, I worked in McDonald's serving both at the front desk taking orders and assisting back team members in food preparation. I believe my relevant education and extensive hands-on experience in customer service and food preparation would prove to be an asset for a management position in your restaurant.

I hope you will consider me deserving for this position in your restaurant, and I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (the flight from Delhi to Toronto), specify the desired role (junior management), and provide a logical justification for your suitability by referencing your hospitality studies and previous experience at McDonald's. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills—such as inventory management or staff training—would directly benefit his specific restaurant chain, adding more depth to your suitability argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between your past experience and your current interest is smooth. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'While I was studying...' and 'I believe my relevant education...', which help link your ideas together. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that referencing remains precise throughout; for example, the connection between your previous experience and the 'asset' you would be to his company is clear, but could be further strengthened with more varied linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'inquire', 'opportunity', 'inspiring', and 'hands-on experience'. There are a few minor slips, such as 'postion' (spelling) and 'saturady' (spelling), and a minor collocation error in 'consider me deserving for this position' (better: 'consider me for this position'). Despite these, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to business management to elevate the professional tone further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'hearing aboutyour' (missing space) and 'provide me an opportunity' (should be 'provide me with an opportunity'). Additionally, 'which involves day-to-day customer interaction' is a well-constructed relative clause. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal structure of the letter is maintained throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent proofreading to eliminate small typographical errors and focus on using a wider variety of complex grammatical structures.
