Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to inquire about a job opportunity in one of your restaurants, which you mentioned when we met recently during a plane journey.

We recently shared a flight from Delhi to Toronto by Air Canada last saturday, during which I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about your inspiring business journey. I am grateful for your generous offer to consider me for a position within your chain of restaurants.

I am keen to work in the food business which involves day-to-day customer interaction and high standards of food preparation. I am interested in a junior management position which will provide me with opportunity to not only show my management skills but also to prove my leadership qualities.

While I was studying hospitality in the university, I worked in McDonald's serving both at the front desk taking orders and assisting kitchen members in food preparation. I believe my relevant education and extensive hands-on experience in customer service and food preparation would prove to be an asset for a management position in your restaurant.

I hope you will find me deserving for this position in your restaurant, and I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (Delhi to Toronto flight), specified your interest in a junior management role, and provided a strong justification for your suitability by linking your hospitality studies and previous experience at McDonald's to the role. The tone is appropriately formal and polite throughout, which is essential for a professional letter of this nature. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and reminder of the meeting to your professional interests and relevant experience. You use cohesive devices such as 'While I was studying' and 'not only... but also' effectively to connect your thoughts. The transition between paragraphs is smooth, and the overall structure is coherent. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'inquire about a job opportunity', 'inspiring business journey', and 'hands-on experience' are used accurately. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning with precision. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band; for example, instead of 'food business', terms like 'hospitality industry' or 'culinary sector' would be more precise. Overall, the word choice is natural and supports the professional tone of the letter well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For instance, the sentence 'I am interested in a junior management position which will provide me with opportunity to not only show my management skills but also to prove my leadership qualities' is well-constructed. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. You have good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. The use of tenses is consistent and appropriate for the context of the letter.
