Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mukesh Sir,

Hello sir, I hope you remember me. I am the guy who was sitting beside you in our plane journey from Toronto to Surrey on 5th of August. So, I am writing this to express my strong concern regarding the possible jobs suggested by you during our flight.

We exchanged pleasantries in the Starbucks cafe at the Toronto airport while having coffee. I remember you were reading “Rich daddy poor daddy” novel and i asked you something about the book. Luckily, we were sitting beside each other in the flight.

However, you mentioned that you own a chain of restaurants. I have just completed my masters in business studies and I was looking for a full time job as a manager in any restaurant. Therefore, I thought of contacting you if any job is available for me.

Furthermore, I have some experience in managing crew members as i have worked as a group leader during my final capstone project in my university . Adding to this, I have been working part time as a receptionist from past 2 years in famous restaurant JW Marriot. So , now I am looking for a full time job as I have completed studies. I would be very grateful if you help me in starting my new journey.

I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely, Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in a management role, and provide relevant background regarding your education and experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up, though the opening 'Dear Mukesh Sir' is slightly informal for a business context in English; 'Dear Mr. [Surname]' would be more standard. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have provided enough detail to make your request persuasive without straying from the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial meeting to the request for employment and finally your qualifications. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' to link your points. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly repetitive, and some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the flow. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of your intent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'exchanged pleasantries' and 'managing crew members' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'express my strong concern' (which usually implies a problem or worry rather than interest) and 'from past 2 years' (should be 'for the past two years'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'in the flight' (should be 'on the flight'), 'i' (which should always be capitalized), and 'if any job is available' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are inconsistent spaces before commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will help improve your accuracy.
