Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kevin,

I hope you are doing well, and thinking that you reached home safely. I would like to introduce my self - Kamil Ghori whom you met on the flight from Paris to Munich on 21st December. You were with your family going for the vacation and I was in the same boat.

It was pleasure to talk with you regarding your business, such as how you handle your day to day operations while running multi chain restaurants. As we discussed about my role in your company, I am writing this letter to you regarding job opportunity in purchasing department of your company as I am holding 7+ years of experience helping company sources their needs from the world. I was primary person responsible for all supply chain related management in my last company called G-matrix. I believe that I can be a strong candidate for your chain of restaurants because of my expertises in negotiation while performing purchase.

I am expecting positive reply from you and happy to schedule my interview call with you where we can discuss more about my fit for the role.

Thank you,

Kamil Ghori.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from Paris to Munich), specified the desired role (purchasing department), and provided a logical justification for your suitability based on your seven years of experience. The tone is appropriate for a professional follow-up letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more standard for a formal letter; for instance, 'thinking that you reached home safely' is slightly unnatural. Expanding slightly more on how your specific skills would benefit his particular restaurant chain would further strengthen the development of your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial meeting to the job inquiry and finally the call to action. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. While the flow is generally good, some cohesive devices are slightly mechanical, such as 'As we discussed about my role'. Using more varied linking phrases would improve the flow. Additionally, the reference 'I was in the same boat' is an idiom that does not quite fit the formal context of a job application letter; a more direct approach would be better.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your professional background, using terms like 'day to day operations', 'supply chain related management', and 'negotiation'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'multi chain restaurants' (should be 'multi-chain' or 'chain of restaurants') and 'expertises' (the plural of expertise is simply 'expertise'). The phrase 'helping company sources their needs' contains a grammatical error in the verb form ('sourcing'). Improving these collocations and ensuring correct word forms will help you achieve a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips that slightly hinder the precision of your writing, such as 'I hope you are doing well, and thinking that you reached home safely' (the second clause is awkward) and 'I am holding 7+ years of experience' (should be 'I have 7+ years of experience'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the hyphenation in 'day to day' and the phrasing of your introduction. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb tenses and article usage.
