Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear MR. Bose,

I hope this letter finds you well. First of all, I would like to remind you of our first meeting on the flight going from Toronto to Calgary, last week. We had a long conversation about restaurant business and future job opportunity at one of your restaurants.

I would like to appreciate your suggestion to contact you about a possible career in one of your Calgary's branch. I would love to work at your restaurant as a Head Chef. I have always been interested in cooking and customer service roles. I am looking for a job that helps grow my cooking skills further and give me chance to make people happy by my cooking. That is the main reason I want to work at your restaurant.

While passion is good, i believe, skills and experience is also equally important. I have worked as an Assistant Cook in a Indian restaurant for 3 years. Over there i had chance to build and grow my cooking and customer service skills. I believe, these qualities makes me best fit for this role.

Once again, I would like to thank you for giving me this opportunity and believing in me.

Best Regards,

Nihal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the meeting context (Toronto to Calgary flight), specified the desired role (Head Chef), and provided relevant justification for your suitability by highlighting your three years of experience as an Assistant Cook. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have mentioned a specific culinary specialty or a particular achievement from your previous role to make your candidacy more compelling.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'While', and 'Once again' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is consistent. For example, 'Over there' is a bit informal; using 'During my time there' would improve the professional tone and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'conversation', 'opportunity', 'career', and 'passion'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'one of your Calgary's branch', which should be 'one of your Calgary branches'. You also repeat the word 'cooking' several times, which limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, try to use synonyms like 'culinary skills', 'food preparation', or 'gastronomy' to show a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'skills and experience is' should be 'are' (subject-verb agreement), and 'makes me best fit' should be 'make me the best fit'. Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' in the third paragraph. Increasing your control over these basic grammatical rules and proofreading for small errors would significantly improve your score.
