Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Singh
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to ask about job in one of your restaurant.
Firstly, my name is Ronny Joy from Surat city. We were met before 1 month in Indigo plane. We sat together during the journey, and you introduced your self as a owner of "Taaj Hotel". You also told me that you have six branches of your hotel in different city including Surat town.
Secondly, I would like to tell you that I am interested in hotel management work and I have took 6 month course in this particular field. Thus, if you give opportunity to work in your hotel, than it would be grateful for me.
Lastly, I think this job is suitable for me because, already I have 2 years experience in this job. In addition, I feel more confident and happy with this responsibility. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Ronny Joy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully reminded the recipient of the meeting context (the Indigo flight), identified the desired role (hotel management), and provided reasons for your suitability (experience and training). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter, although the opening and closing could be slightly more polished. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. To improve, ensure that you expand slightly more on your professional background to make your candidacy more compelling.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While these are functional, they are somewhat mechanical. The progression of ideas is logical, starting with the introduction, moving to the request, and finishing with your qualifications. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In light of this') to create a more natural flow between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'opportunity', 'responsibility', and 'management'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'We were met before 1 month' (should be 'We met a month ago') and 'it would be grateful for me' (should be 'I would be grateful'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations related to employment and hospitality would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have took' (should be 'I have taken'), 'than it would be' (should be 'then it would be'), and 'as a owner' (should be 'as an owner'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on mastering verb tenses, particularly the present perfect, and ensure correct article usage. Proofreading for small slips in spelling and word form will also help improve your accuracy.
