Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this email to discuss meeting which we had two weeks ago.

Firstly, I would like to inform you that I met you last time in a flight where we exchange our contact detail to keep in touch, also I appreciate that you gave me chance to apply for a job in one of your restaurant.

Apart from this, I have been doing deferent jobs since I started my journey including; waiter, supervisor. At present, I am working as a manager at local restaurant, but I would love to move and explore new opportunities, while looking a place as a manager level.

Finally, I have had enough experience as well as skills to manage staff, organization, and good communication and handling customers skills, although I will try my best to understand all rules and regulations of your chain of restaurants.

I hope to hear from you soon for further information and thank you so much for your time and efforts.

Kind Regards,

Smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully reminded the recipient of the meeting, identified the desired role (manager), and explained your suitability through your background in the restaurant industry. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about your achievements in your current role or elaborate on why your skills would specifically benefit his chain of restaurants. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left with a good understanding of your intentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from this', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph ('...keep in touch, also I appreciate...') is slightly awkward and would benefit from better punctuation or a conjunction. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures are a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunities', 'regulations', and 'supervisor'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'deferent' instead of 'different', 'in a flight' instead of 'on a flight', and 'looking a place' instead of 'looking for a position'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to professional correspondence and proofreading for spelling mistakes, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from being considered more flexible or sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'discuss meeting which we had' (missing articles), 'exchange our contact detail' (should be plural), and 'handling customers skills' (incorrect word form). While these errors rarely impede communication, they are persistent. You should focus on mastering article usage (a/the), subject-verb agreement, and pluralization. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they are grammatically accurate. Currently, the frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.
