Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing this letter to apply for a job you offered me while on board for a flight from USA to Canada. Typically, we met at Toronto Pearson airport on 12th June on flight number- ZXZ345 boarded at 12 noon. As we discussed about my experience in hotel management and my recent completed Master's in Business in Digital marketing.
Firstly, I have heard a lot about your restaurants around the globe and I think this job will provide international exposure and work environment to work more precisely and professionally. This job will provide me hands on experience in marketing and management simultaneously.
Secondly, I think I'm the best candidate for hiring as I have an educational qualifications which merge best with your job vacancy. Moreover, I have an experience in management for almost 2 years and I'm a very calm and composed, when it comes to hectic schedules.
Looking for a positive response.
Yours faithfully,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully reminded the recipient of the meeting, specified your interest in a marketing/management role, and provided reasons for your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a business-related letter, although the opening is slightly awkward. The ideas are relevant, though the development of your suitability could be more detailed to fully convince the reader. Overall, the task is addressed clearly and effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through your points. However, some of the sentence connections are a bit mechanical, and the flow between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'international exposure', 'hectic schedules', and 'simultaneously'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'recent completed Master's' (should be 'recently completed') and 'best candidate for hiring' (should be 'best candidate for the position'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, these occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Typically, we met' (where 'Actually' or 'Specifically' would be more appropriate) and 'I have an educational qualifications' (incorrect article usage). Additionally, the sentence 'I'm a very calm and composed, when it comes to...' contains an unnecessary comma. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
