Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing this letter to reconnect with you after our small conversation on the flight from London to Sydney. We met last Friday on our way to Sydney on the flight operated by British Airways. I was seated beside you in the business class. I wore a brown casual striped shirt with black linen pants.
During our chat, you mentioned that I could contact you for a potential position at one of your restaurants. Currently, I am looking for a front desk helper or a barista role if available. I like to deal with customers and offer exceptional service to make their time memorable at the restaurant.
I am well-suited for this job because I like to build relationships, communicate, and offer great customer service to my customers. I have a diploma in food handling and customer relations from the University of Edinburgh. Moreover, I have two years of serving experience in the London city. I am also open to relocate in the suburbs of the city if required. Please reach out to me, if you have any questions. Thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Anderson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify the desired roles (front desk or barista), and provide relevant qualifications and reasons for your suitability. The tone is appropriate for a professional follow-up letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the correspondence is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and context to the job request and finally your qualifications. Cohesive devices such as 'During our chat', 'Moreover', and 'Currently' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is coherent and easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'potential position', 'exceptional service', and 'customer relations'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, it is functional rather than sophisticated. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more varied professional terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter shows a good command of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free and clearly constructed. There are minor issues, such as 'open to relocate in the suburbs of the city' (should be 'open to relocating to') and 'in the London city' (which is slightly unnatural; 'in London' is sufficient). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate throughout the text.
