Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter regarding our recent plane conversation where you had mentioned about a job opportunity for a professional at your Bangalore food restaurant, which could be suitable for me.

We met during our flight from Delhi to Bangalore on 14th of August on Air Indigo flght. We had our plane seats besides each other as number reading D2 and D3. During this conversation we shared alot about each other and our professions and in the moment you offered me a job positon at your Bangalore restaurant and and shared me your contact details.

I would delighted to work at your restaurant as a head chef as this is something I have been doing for past five years and would bring more experience on the table in addition to art and taste. I have done my culinary course from best culinary art college where many celebrity chefs have achieved their skills. In addition,I have participated in many culinary TV shows.

I would be most suitable person for this role as I have gained lot more experience in food industry and also make dishes around the world, hence bring more flavour and taste to the table.

I hope this qualities and skills set me apart from the rest and you could consider me for this position. Hope to a prompt response from you.

Warm Rergards,

J.J.William

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from Delhi to Bangalore), specified the desired role (head chef), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your five years of experience and culinary education. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is a bit generic; using the businessman's name would have been more professional. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'hence' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors, such as the repetition of 'and' in the second paragraph ('and and shared me'). While the progression of ideas is generally smooth, the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the overall flow and sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'culinary course' and 'head chef'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'bring more experience on the table' (the idiom is 'bring to the table') and 'make dishes around the world' (which should be 'create dishes from around the world'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better control over collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'where you had mentioned about' (should be 'mentioned'), 'shared me your contact details' (should be 'shared your contact details with me'), and 'I hope this qualities' (should be 'these qualities'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors with commas and spacing. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
