Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to explain my interest in the restaurant job that you suggested on the plane journey from Toronto to Calgary.

I have been working as a restaurant manager at a very popular local restaurant and I would like to pursue the same position in my future jobs. I also have more than 5 years of experience as a manager.

What makes me a stronger fit for this position is, I have a Masters degree in hospitality from a very reputable university. Moreover, every year I work as a senior manager at stampede a very popular and big event in Calgary giving me the experience of handling large crowd.

Yours Truly,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: reminding the recipient of the meeting, stating the desired job, and explaining suitability. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the points are relevant, they are presented in a very brief manner. To achieve a higher band, you must expand on your experience and provide more detail regarding your suitability for the role. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, but the lack of length prevents a full development of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs relies on simple connectors like 'Moreover'. To improve, you should aim for a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother flow between sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the overall structure feels a bit sparse due to the limited word count.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'hospitality' and 'reputable university', but much of the language is basic, such as 'very popular' and 'big event'. There is a lack of sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To improve, try to avoid repetitive intensifiers like 'very' and instead use more descriptive, precise adjectives that convey your professional experience more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'handling large crowd' should be 'handling large crowds', and 'at stampede' should be capitalized as 'at the Stampede'. Additionally, the sentence 'What makes me a stronger fit for this position is, I have...' is slightly awkward; a better structure would be 'What makes me a strong candidate is that I possess...'. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
