Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Mehak. We met last week on a plane while going from Calgary to Toronto on August 24,2026. I was your co-passenger and we had a talk regarding your chain of restaurants in Toronto.

I am writing this letter to ask about any possible job vacancy in any of your restaurants. I search about your restaurants and i really got surprised with the food and service quality you are providing to your customers. I would love to get hire as a chef. The reason behind this is that cooking is my passion. I am really good at cooking different types of cuisines and i tried variety of cuisines and that is the reason i know which type of people will like which food.

I also open stalls in the small events in Calgary. People here are really fond of my food and they really appreciate my way of cooking. I want to work with you because i believe that it will be a good opportunity for me for gaining experience and to grow in future.

I would be really grateful in case you give me an opportunity to work with you. I will give my best to be at your expectation.

Yours Faithfully,

Mehak Arora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified your interest in a chef position, and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your passion for cooking and experience with food stalls. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a business contact. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons for suitability are slightly more detailed; for example, you could mention specific culinary skills or certifications to make your candidacy more compelling. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing this letter to' and 'The reason behind this is that' to connect your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to move between sentences more fluidly. While the progression of ideas is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the text flow more naturally and elevate the overall structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'co-passenger', 'vacancy', and 'cuisines'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I search about your restaurants' (should be 'researched') and 'get hire' (should be 'get hired'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. For instance, instead of saying 'I am really good at', you could use 'I possess a strong aptitude for'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'i tried variety' (should be 'a variety') and 'i believe that it will be a good opportunity for me for gaining' (should be 'to gain'). Additionally, the personal pronoun 'I' must always be capitalized. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and proofreading for basic mechanical errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
