Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing regarding for a job opportunity at one of your restaurants as a head chef. You suggested me to contact you for this job role when we met on the plane.

We were flying on the same plane which was heading towards London. The flight number was : XY245. We sat next to each other in the business class and the flight was around 9 P.M.

We had a great conversation about your restaurant chains and I mentioned that I was a chef myself. You gave me your email and told me to contact you for the head chef position in one of your restaurants. It would be a great pleasure to work with you if you would fove me this opportunity.

I believe I would be the perfect candidate for the head chef position, as I have several years of cooking experience in a 5 star hotel. I do have a passion for cooking as well. In addition, I have recently taken a course in international cuisines to enhance my skills further.

I hope to get a response from you soon. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Mavi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight XY245 to London), specified the desired role (head chef), and provided relevant justifications for your suitability, such as your 5-star hotel experience and recent training in international cuisines. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening is more professional; since you were given a name during the conversation, using 'Dear Mr. [Surname]' would be more effective than 'Dear Sir'. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. Ideas progress clearly from the introduction of the meeting to the job application and finally the justification of skills. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'as well' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which supports the clarity of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'job opportunity', 'perfect candidate', and 'enhance my skills' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'suggested me to contact' (should be 'suggested that I contact') and the typo 'fove' instead of 'give'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise or sophisticated collocations related to the culinary industry would elevate the quality of your writing. The current range is functional but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I am writing regarding for a job' (the 'for' is redundant) and 'You suggested me to contact' (which should be 'You suggested that I contact'). Punctuation is generally correct, though the colon usage in 'flight number was : XY245' is unnecessary. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help improve this score.
