Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing with regard to the job opportunity in one of your restaurants. It's been a few months since we met on a flight which was going from London to France, and you were sitting right next to me. Further, our conversation started about the jobs, when you mentioned me that you are a businessman who owns a number of restaurant in France.

Talking about my job experiences I have worked in plenty of restaurants. Intially, I started as a chef, then become a supervisor. Later on, I promoted to the manager of an Italian restaurant. Though I have my hands on everything, I am more interested in assisting customers. Creating an

environment and helping guests is one of the task which I like to do the most.

I would be most suitable person for this job since I have been working in this field more than five years. Time management, discipline, team work and punctuality are my fine skills, which I use to give customers a commandable experience. I hope you will consider my request.

Yours sincerely

Ana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in a customer-facing role, and provide relevant reasons for your suitability based on your experience. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more detailed; for example, you could elaborate on a specific achievement from your time as a manager to further strengthen your case for suitability.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the meeting context from your professional experience. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Further,' 'Initially,' and 'Later on' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For instance, the transition between your past experience and your current interest in customer service could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'job opportunity,' 'supervisor,' and 'time management.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'mentioned me' (should be 'told me') and 'commandable experience' (likely meant 'commendable'). Additionally, 'have my hands on everything' is a bit informal for this context. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and ensure that collocations are accurate to convey your meaning more effectively and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'which was going from' (which could be simplified to 'from'), 'number of restaurant' (should be plural 'restaurants'), and 'one of the task' (should be 'tasks'). There are also issues with verb tense consistency, such as 'I promoted to the manager' (should be passive 'I was promoted'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction.
