Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to follow up on interaction we had last week in the Plaza Premium Lounge at Delhi International Airport. As you told me to contact you, if I am interested in working with you.

I researched your business and found that you have multiple waffle shops in my state and they all are doing well. As I have been in marketing for last 5 years and running my own AI-based marketing agency. I can clearly notice that you need a strong marketing strategy to boost your business in terms of business's presence and sales.

I would love to work with you as a 'Marketing Manager' because my skills in this field could be helpful to you. We can use social media ads and influencer marketing to boost your business. I also have an idea of making a smartphone application for your business where customers can collect points, place orders and reserve tables. I also have few more plans for your business.

Thank you for giving me a chance to work with such a prestigious business. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Rajveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the meeting place and time, specify your interest in a Marketing Manager role, and provide a logical justification for your suitability by highlighting your five years of experience and your AI-based agency. The tone is appropriate for a professional follow-up letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentences are complete; for example, 'As you told me to contact you, if I am interested in working with you' is a sentence fragment that should be integrated into the previous sentence to improve clarity and flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As I have been' and 'I also have', to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the research you conducted and your specific job proposal could be more tightly linked. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'marketing strategy', 'influencer marketing', and 'prestigious'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'making a smartphone application' (better: 'developing') and 'I also have few more plans' (needs an article: 'a few more'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive sentence starters will help improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For instance, 'As you told me to contact you, if I am interested...' is a fragment, and 'As I have been in marketing for last 5 years' is missing the definite article 'the'. Additionally, 'they all are doing well' is slightly informal. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
