Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to follow up the conversation we had during our flight from London to Delhi on March 3rd. We sat next to each other in row 14, and you had mentioned that you are planning to on board for couple of positions for your rural branches.
I am particularly interested to apply for the role of shift supervisor in one of your restaurant group. During our conversation you mentioned that you are going to enlarge your casual dining outlets. I would like to contribute with my potential skill-set to manage that facility.
As far as experience is concerned, I have worked for barista coffee as a general manager for more than 3 years. I used to oversee the general operations, inventory management as well as labour record. In addition, my graduation in customer service make me a potential fit for this role.
I have attached my cv and resume along with this letter for your review. I would love to welcome this opportunity.
your Sincere,
Karanveer singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from London to Delhi), specified the desired role (shift supervisor), and provided relevant justification for your suitability by referencing your experience as a general manager. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic given you met the person personally. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated into a natural flow, as some phrasing regarding the business expansion felt slightly forced.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction to the job request and finally to your qualifications. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'As far as experience is concerned' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is essential for a formal letter of this nature.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inventory management', 'casual dining outlets', and 'potential skill-set'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'on board for couple of positions' (should be 'hiring for a couple of positions') and 'welcome this opportunity' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise usage of business-related collocations to reach the higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I am particularly interested to apply' should be 'interested in applying', and 'my graduation in customer service make me' should be 'makes me' to ensure subject-verb agreement. Additionally, 'your Sincere' is an incorrect closing phrase; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, and your sentence construction remains largely coherent.
