Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to
ask you about a job vacancy in one of your restaurants.
Last month, we met in flight and you sat next to me when we were travelling from Toronto to Delhi. I was glad to hear that you are a businessman and owns a number of restaurants in Canada. You also suggested me to contact about a possible job in your restaurant.
Actually, I am interested in cashier job at the front desk in your hotel. I can also handle the phone calls during the peak hours at weekends. Moreover, I am multi-tasker and can help in taking orders in my leisure time.
I think, i am a suitable candidate for this job because i have good communication skills along with two years of experience as a Cashier in MC Donald in Chandigarh, India.
Hope to hearing a positive response from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Ravjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified the desired role, and provided relevant background information to support your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a business-related letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir/Madam' is slightly generic given that you met the person personally. To improve, ensure you maintain a consistent professional tone throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear purpose for the correspondence. You have effectively communicated your intentions and qualifications, meeting the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the specific request and then to your qualifications. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Actually' to link sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the connection between the introduction and the body could be more fluid. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vacancy', 'multi-tasker', and 'suitable candidate'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'met in flight' (should be 'met on a flight') and 'owns a number of restaurants' (should be 'own' to match the plural subject 'you'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Attempting to use more precise collocations or professional business terminology would enhance your score. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'suggested me to contact' (should be 'suggested that I contact'), 'cashier job' (should be 'a cashier job'), and the inconsistent capitalization of 'i' and 'MC Donald'. Additionally, 'Hope to hearing' should be 'I hope to hear'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and consistent capitalization.
