Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear mr.kunal,
Hope you are doing well. I had a great time travelling with you last week from toronto to montreal, If you remember we sat next to each other on a plane and while on the journey we shared our experiences from past and had a talk about career.
I wanted to contact you, since the time I got back home regarding a job oppurtunity that you said to contact you. As you said you have chain of restaurants, I thought my education and career preferences might align with the kind of jobs you have.
Iam looking for a restaurant supervisor job role which perfectly matches my experience as my past job role which involves duties and responsibilities like maintaining the high safety standards, cleanliness and hygiene in the restaurant and also posses good comunication skills. In addition to this I have a hotel management degree.
Hence,I think my education and past experiences determine that Iam a suitable candidate for the above mentioned job role. Iam always available to discuss about this whenever you are free.
Thank you for your time and have a good week.
reagards,
mike.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (Toronto to Montreal flight), specify the desired role (restaurant supervisor), and provide relevant justification for your suitability by mentioning your hotel management degree and experience with safety and hygiene standards. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up letter, although the opening and closing could be slightly more formal. The ideas are well-developed and directly relevant to the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of your communication immediately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the initial meeting to the job inquiry and finally to your qualifications. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. While you use transitions like 'In addition to this' and 'Hence', the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied linking words. Paragraphing is present, but the structure is slightly disjointed due to the repetitive sentence starters. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the cohesive structure lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunity', 'responsibilities', and 'qualifications'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'oppurtunity', 'comunication', and 'reagards', which detract from the professional quality of the letter. The word choice is functional but lacks variety; for instance, you repeat 'job role' and 'contact you' multiple times. To improve, you should aim for more precise synonyms and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes, which currently limit your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I had a great time travelling with you... if you remember we sat next to each other'. However, there are frequent punctuation and grammatical errors, including missing capital letters for proper nouns ('mr.kunal', 'toronto', 'montreal'), inconsistent spacing after punctuation, and run-on sentences. Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and verb agreement (e.g., 'you have chain of restaurants' should be 'you have a chain of restaurants'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
