Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this after our recent encounter at a plane journey to Canada, a week ago. After our conversation about the possible job opportunities you can provide me I am interested in telling you how can I be a candidate you might be interested in providing a job based on my skills.
To begin with, I have been working as a cook in a very reputed restaurant in Vancouver called, The Keg from last three years. I can prepare a plethora of cuisines which includes mediterranean, Indian, American and Chinese. Having these skills with experience helped me gain a five star food review by many customers.
Also, I remember our conversation about you needing a cook who can cook Indian and chinese food. With respect to our talk and my need for requiring another job I think I could be a suitable match for a position of cook at one of your restaurants.
Waiting for your response.
Yours truly,
Arshpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You begin by reminding the businessman of when and where you met, stating 'our recent encounter at a plane journey to Canada, a week ago'. You clearly identify the job you are interested in by stating your desire for 'a position of cook'. Furthermore, you explain why you would be suitable by highlighting your three years of experience as a cook at 'The Keg' in Vancouver, and mentioning your ability to prepare a variety of cuisines including 'mediterranean, Indian, American and Chinese'. The tone is generally appropriate for a business-related letter, though the opening greeting could be more specific. All parts of the task are addressed adequately, demonstrating a clear purpose and relevant supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You use appropriate transitional markers such as 'To begin with' and 'Also' to structure your ideas and guide the reader smoothly from your introduction to your work experience and suitability. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as your background and your specific job interest. While some cohesive devices are straightforward rather than highly flexible, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the relationships between your past encounter, your current skills, and your job application remain transparent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'encounter', 'job opportunities', 'cuisine', and 'food review'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'plethora of cuisines', which shows a good effort to expand your lexical range. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'at a plane journey' instead of 'on a plane journey', and 'from last three years' instead of 'for the past three years'. Despite these minor errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'a cook who can cook Indian and chinese food' and the participial phrase in 'Having these skills with experience helped me gain...'. You demonstrate reasonable control over punctuation, and many sentences are grammatically sound. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'how can I be a candidate' (which should be indirect: 'how I can be a candidate') and 'my need for requiring another job' (which is slightly redundant). These errors occasionally cause minor hesitation for the reader but do not prevent overall comprehension.
