Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inquire about on our coversation during a recent flight and you told me about possible job opportunity at one of your restaurants.

We met on a flight from Nelson to Calgary on 2nd Spetember, when I was seated next to you. During the journey, we were talking about your restaurant business and my professional background. After arrival at Calgary airport, you kindly suggested that I contact you if I was inerested in woking at one of your restauratns.

I am particularly interested in a position as a restaurant supervisor or assistant manager. I would be happy to take responsibilities such as dealing with customers, managing staff schedule and daily operations.

As I have three years previous experience of manager at Skyview hotel. I am organised, reliable and comfortable working in a busy environment. In addition, I have strong communication and customer service skills, which I believe are essential in the restaurant industry.

I look forward to see your positive response. I would be happy to provide my CV or attend an interview at your convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a clear and appropriate tone suitable for a semi-formal letter. You successfully remind the reader where and when you met, stating clearly that it was on a flight from Nelson to Calgary on 2nd September. You also state the kind of job you are interested in, specifically mentioning a restaurant supervisor or assistant manager position. Furthermore, you provide strong reasons why you are suitable for the job, detailing your three years of previous managerial experience at Skyview hotel and highlighting your customer service skills. The purpose of the letter is consistently clear and fully developed throughout, meeting all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following a standard professional layout. Information is presented in a logical sequence, moving smoothly from the initial meeting on the flight to the specific job interest, and finally to your qualifications and call to action. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'During the journey', 'After arrival', and 'In addition' are used effectively to connect ideas, ensuring the letter flows well from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, with appropriate business and hospitality terms such as 'professional background', 'daily operations', 'customer service skills', and 'busy environment'. There are some spelling and typographical errors, such as 'conversation' spelled as 'coversation', 'September' as 'Spetember', 'interested' as 'inerested', 'working' as 'woking', and 'restaurants' as 'restauratns'. Additionally, there is a minor lexical choice error in 'experience of manager' instead of 'experience as a manager'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the overall register remains polite and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional usage and subordinate clauses ('After arrival at Calgary airport, you kindly suggested that...'). You demonstrate good control over past and present tenses when recounting the meeting and describing your current qualifications. There are a few grammatical errors, such as the missing preposition in 'inquire about on our coversation' and the tense error in 'I look forward to see your positive response' (should be 'seeing'). Despite these occasional mistakes, the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and communication is never impeded.
