Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am Julie Chaurasia I met you on the plane flying back to Canada from India On 25 September. To be precise we were sharing seats in the same row. I hope you would have reached your destination hassle-free.
I am writing to express my interest in the Cashier position at one of your restaurants. As you had mentioned about the newly opened restaurant in Markham is running short on staff.
If you would recall our meet, I had stated I can work full-time being a student due to the recent changes made by IRCC students are now allowed to work full-time with no restriction to hours. I had worked frequently with my dad at our supermarket back in India from there I gained knowledge in counting money, verifying bills, changing the cash register after shift change and cross-checking sales with the revenue generated to tally with stocks.
I would really appreciate if you would consider my profile for the aforementioned role.
Hoping for a positive response from your end.
Your sincerely,
Julie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You began your letter by appropriately reminding the businessman of when and where you met, noting the specific flight back to Canada from India on 25 September and sharing seats in the same row. You clearly stated the job you are interested in, specifically the cashier position at one of his restaurants, and you explained why you would be suitable by highlighting your relevant experience working with your dad at your family supermarket in India. All parts of the task are well addressed with relevant and coherent ideas, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You structured the response into appropriate paragraphs, starting with a polite greeting and the context of your meeting, followed by your job interest, your qualifications, and a polite closing. However, some sentences are run-on or lack necessary punctuation, such as in "As you had mentioned about the newly opened restaurant in Markham is running short on staff." Better separation and transitional phrasing would enhance the overall flow. Cohesive devices are generally handled adequately, ensuring the reader follows your progression of thought easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with reasonable precision. Phrases like "express my interest," "hassle-free," and "aforementioned role" show an attempt at using less common lexical items appropriate for a formal business communication. However, there are some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as "If you would recall our meet" instead of "meeting," and minor phrasing slips like "changing the cash register after shift change." Despite these occasional lexical errors, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate your intentions clearly to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in "students are now allowed to work full-time with no restriction to hours." However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. For instance, run-on sentences occur frequently, such as "I am Julie Chaurasia I met you on the plane..." where a period or conjunction is missing. There are also tense and verb form inaccuracies, such as "I hope you would have reached" and "As you had mentioned about the newly opened restaurant..." While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band.
