Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Shah,
I am writing to formally request your assistance regarding a job in one of your restaurants.
To provide some specific context, we were travelling to Toronto on 8th January and I was sharing my seat with you in the plane. Also, if you remember we did a conversation related to your business about food chain restaurants and we shared the contact details.
I am highly interested in a management role, it might include manager, assistant manager or supervisor position. Plus, I am looking for a new job as soon as possible and I am willingly ready to move anywhere in Ontario.
Regarding my suitability, I have 3 years of work experience as a supervisor at Circle K. Although, I have no prior experience in food industry, I am capable of handling the team and understanding the need of customer.
I hope you will consider my request favourably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required by the task prompt. The letter begins by appropriately reminding the recipient of the meeting time and location, stating 'we were travelling to Toronto on 8th January and I was sharing my seat with you in the plane.' Furthermore, the writer clearly identifies the type of job they are seeking, mentioning a management role, manager, assistant manager, or supervisor position. Finally, the letter justifies the candidate's suitability by referencing three years of work experience as a supervisor at Circle K and an ability to handle teams and customers. The tone is suitably polite and appropriate for a semi-formal business communication. All parts of the task are fully addressed and supported with relevant details, warranting a strong score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from the opening greeting through to the concluding sign-off. Information and ideas are logically sequenced into distinct paragraphs, each handling a specific theme such as context, job preference, and suitability. Cohesive devices are used adequately, for instance, using transitional phrases like 'To provide some specific context', 'Plus', and 'Regarding my suitability'. However, referencing and paragraphing could be slightly more sophisticated to achieve a higher band, as some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is smooth and easy for the reader to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The candidate employs an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'formally request', 'specific context', 'suitability', and 'favourably'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'did a conversation' instead of 'had a conversation' or 'engaged in a conversation', and 'willingly ready' which is slightly redundant. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly and precisely enough to maintain smooth communication without causing any real misunderstanding for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer showcases a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. Examples of complex structures include 'Although, I have no prior experience in food industry, I am capable of handling the team...' There are occasional grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in food industry' instead of 'in the food industry') and a comma splice in 'I am highly interested in a management role, it might include...'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors persist, they do not impede communication. The control over grammar is solid for a competent user.
