Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Jon,

I am writing this letter to remind you about the possible job opportunity you proposed for one of your restaurants when we were in the flight from New York to Toronto last sunday.

I am interested in the position of Line Cook as I like to cook diferent cuisines for poeple. Infact, when we have a function at our house, I manage everything from buying vegetables and spices to decorating the plates aesthetically.

When I read the job description on the webpage, I found that I am a suitable candidate for this job as I have ten years of experience of a busy restaurant with the seating capacity of over two hundred as a chef of Italian and Chines cuisines which is the main requirement of this position. Furthermore, I have been awarded twice as Employee Of The Year because of the quality and taste of the food as well as increased footfall. Looking forward to hear from you.

I truly appreciate your understanding and support.

Yours Sincerely,

Sohilahamad Bodar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient when and where you met, stating 'when we were in the flight from New York to Toronto last sunday'. You also identified the specific job you are interested in, stating 'I am interested in the position of Line Cook'. Furthermore, you provided strong and relevant reasons why you would be suitable for the role, mentioning your 'ten years of experience' and that you have been 'awarded twice as Employee Of The Year'. All bullet points are fully addressed with clear and relevant supporting details. The tone of the letter is appropriately polite and professional for a job inquiry, fulfilling the general task purpose effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear logical progression throughout. The opening greeting and initial reminder set a clear context. Ideas are adequately linked using cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Infact'. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the job interest, the qualifications, and the closing remarks. However, the paragraph containing your experience is a single, very long, and somewhat run-on sentence ('When I read the job description... requirement of this position'), which slightly disrupts the flow and places a heavy burden on punctuation. Breaking this into two sentences would have improved readability. Overall, the organization is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and relevant range of vocabulary for the task. You successfully use topic-specific terminology such as 'Line Cook', 'job description', and 'footfall'. There are, however, a few spelling errors and typos that detract from the overall precision, such as 'diferent' instead of 'different', 'poeple' instead of 'people', 'Infact' instead of 'In fact', and 'Chines' instead of 'Chinese'. Additionally, the phrase 'experience of a busy restaurant' is slightly unnatural and would be better expressed as 'experience in a busy restaurant'. Despite these minor lexical errors, communication is never impeded, and you make a good attempt at less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate the ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as using subordinate clauses beginning with 'as' and 'when'. However, the text suffers from a lack of control over punctuation and sentence boundaries, particularly the exceptionally long middle sentence that spans several lines without a single full stop. There are also minor mechanical issues, such as lowercasing 'sunday'. While there are grammatical errors and punctuation lapses present, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your meaning.
