Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Johan Philip,
I am writing you a letter regarding request for a job in one of your restaurants as you gave me your business card to contact me if I need one.
I want to remind you that our first meeting was in Air Canada flight going from Vancouver to Toronto and I was sitting next to you. In meantime, we both shared our background and when I told you about my education in hotel management, you told me with full excitement about your ownership of different chains of restaurants around Canada and held me your business card and told me to contact if I need a job.
Since my degree is in Hotel management alongside with great culinary skills, I am looking forward to be a main chef. The reason behind choosing this particular job is my passion and dedication towards cooking where I can not only cook Indian cousines, I am expert in exploring international food.
I think my skills and creativity can also help your business to reach at more heights because I know there is a significant amount of competition in food industry. Hence, if a person like me who is passonate and dedicated towards cooking, can make a huge difference.
I hope you will consider my request and contact me to give an opportunity.
Your Sincerely,
Eric Hampel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You successfully covered all bullet points of the task prompt in a polite and appropriate semi-formal tone. You clearly reminded the reader where and when you met, stating that it was on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Toronto. You also effectively stated what kind of job you are interested in by mentioning your desire to work as a main chef, and you explained why you are suitable by referencing your hotel management degree, great culinary skills, and expertise in both Indian cuisines and international food. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning and sustained throughout. The tone is appropriately professional and enthusiastic, fully meeting the communicative requirements of a general training formal/semi-formal letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter has a clear and logical overall arrangement, moving smoothly from the context of your meeting to the specific job request, your qualifications, and finally a polite call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as your background, your desired role, and your suitability. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, such as 'Since my degree is in Hotel management' and 'The reason behind choosing this particular job'. However, there are minor issues with referencing and transitional phrasing, such as 'In meantime' instead of 'In the meantime' or 'hold me your business card' instead of 'handed me your business card', which slightly interrupts the natural flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items related to the hospitality and culinary industries, such as 'hotel management', 'culinary skills', and 'international food'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, writing 'cousines' instead of 'cuisines', 'reach at more heights' instead of 'reach greater heights', and 'hold me your business card' instead of 'handed me your business card'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully in sentences like 'The reason behind choosing this particular job is my passion and dedication towards cooking where I can not only cook Indian cousines, I am expert in exploring international food.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'I am writing you a letter regarding request for a job' (missing articles and preposition mismatch) and 'contact me if I need one' (referencing confusion). Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally falter, such as the comma splice in the sentence about your passion. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the density of errors keeps this score at a 6.0.
