Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Robins,

I am writing this letter to remind you of the job , you offered to me when we were in the same flight.

My name is Gurpreet. I was sitting next to you in the flight from Toronto to Calgary last week.

At that time , you was telling about a vacant position of Manager in one of your restaurants. We had a long conversation regarding career and fututre endeavours.

I have done graduation in Hotel management and Master's in Business administration. Currently, I am working as a Manager in Hotel Clarion Inn. I have three years of experience in this profession and attached my resume along with this letter.

I am interested in accepting your job offer as I have good communication skills. Along with it , my problem soving ability and decision proves to be an asset for your restaturant. I am very amiable and cooperative by nature which helps me to deal with customers efficiently.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours Faithfully,

Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required in the task prompt. You clearly reminded Mr. Robins about meeting on the Toronto to Calgary flight last week, expressed interest in the restaurant Manager position, and provided solid reasons for your suitability, including your academic qualifications in Hotel Management and Business Administration, alongside practical experience as a Manager at Hotel Clarion Inn. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal business letter. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant, well-developed details, resulting in a strong performance fitting Band 7.5 to 8.0. For Band 8, ideas are exceptionally well-developed with only rare minor omissions, which aligns closely with this response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs starting with an appropriate salutation, moving into the context of meeting, stating the purpose, elaborating on qualifications, and closing with a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, although some transitional markers could be smoother (such as 'Along with it'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, background, qualifications, and closing. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional mechanical links prevent this criterion from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the structure meets the standard for a solid Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional job inquiry, such as 'endeuavours', 'vacant position', and 'amiable'. However, there are some vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'fututre' instead of 'future', 'soving' instead of 'solving', and 'decision proves' where a noun phrase like 'decision-making skills' is intended. Despite these slips, the lexical resource is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range. With more polished collocations and correct spelling, the score would be higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You have demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences effectively. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as unnecessary commas ('the job , you offered', 'At that time , you was telling'), subject-verb agreement errors ('you was telling' instead of 'you were telling'), and preposition misuse ('we were in the same flight' instead of 'on the same flight'). Additionally, spelling errors like 'restaturant' detract slightly from accuracy. While these errors do not impede communication, they place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category where a mix of error-free and flawed sentences is evident.
