Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Peter,

I hope you're doing well.

It was pleasure to meet you in plane during my trip from India to Canada. I hope you remind me as I was sitting next to you in the plane and we had a great conversation regarding jobs in Canada. You mentioned me at that day you are the owner of Indian restaurant chain which called "Tope" in Alberta. I am writing this letter regarding job opportunity in one of your restaurant there.

The job title I am looking is a chef position because I have great experience as a chef in India. During my university degree in India I did part time job as a chef because at that time I need extra finacial support to pay my rent or other study related expenses. Latter on, I felt I can grow my career as a chef so, i did work in indian restaurant about 5 years after completed my chef administrator degree.

I am a experienced chef. I am well aware of all food policies and chef responsibilities as a indian chef. I also win india master chef 2019 challenge. Moreover, I am a bit famous on social media. I feel I can support your restaurent econimically by working as a chef and serving good food to local Indian community.I hope people in alberta will love my food taste and cooking style.

I am looking forward for your reply. I will appreciate your support if you give me a chance to work for your restautant as a chef.

Yours Faithfully,

Tom Peter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient about when and where you met, stating that you sat next to each other on a flight from India to Canada and discussed jobs. You specified that you are interested in a chef position, and you provided strong reasons for why you are suitable by highlighting your five years of experience, your degree in culinary administration, and winning the India Master Chef 2019 challenge. The tone of the letter is polite, appropriate for a business follow-up, and all parts of the task are well-developed. Therefore, the response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific requirements, and an appropriate closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your introduction, job preferences, qualifications, and the concluding call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'During', 'Moreover', and 'Latter on' (later on) are utilised to connect ideas, although some referencing is slightly mechanical. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy for the reader to follow, demonstrating good progression throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, including terms like 'opportunity', 'financial support', and 'community'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher band, such as 'finacial' (financial), 'Latter on' (Later on), 'restaurent' (restaurant), and 'econimically' (economically). While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight a need for greater precision in spelling and word choice when using less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'During my university degree in India I did part time job as a chef because at that time I need extra finacial support...'. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including tense consistency issues ('I need' instead of 'I needed', 'did work' instead of worked), missing articles ('in plane' instead of 'on a plane', 'as a indian chef' instead of 'as an Indian chef'), and minor capitalization slips ('i did work'). These errors occur frequently but rarely impede overall understanding.
