Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to follow up on our conversation during recent flight from Toronto to British Columbia on 10th September. We were seated next to eachother and we had interesting conversation reagrding food business in Canada. We also discussed about head chef contribution in restaurants as I work as junior chef in one of the good restaurant.

According to our conversation you are looking for the head chef for your chain restaturants. I would like to formally apply for that position. Currently, I am residing in to Toronto but I am willing to move British Columbia if I get any good opportunity.

I never worked as head chef however, I always work as right hand of head chef. I studied in one of the best culinary colleges and gained my work experience in Taj hotel, Mumbai, India. I have an experince as a chef over 12 years so I think I will be best person for head chef position.

Yours faithfully,

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The letter begins by reminding the recipient of their meeting on a flight from Toronto to British Columbia on 10th September, perfectly addressing the first bullet point. Furthermore, the writer clearly identifies the desired role by stating, 'I would like to formally apply for that position' as a head chef, satisfying the second bullet point. Finally, the third bullet point is covered well as the candidate outlines their twelve years of experience, culinary college background, and previous work at the Taj hotel in Mumbai. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal job enquiry, and all parts of the prompt are fully developed and addressed, matching the Band 7 level descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical progression and organization throughout. Paragraphs are used appropriately to divide the introduction, the application and specific job interest, and the candidate's personal background and qualifications. Basic cohesive devices are present and referencing is generally clear, such as 'According to our conversation' and 'Currently, I am residing'. However, paragraph transitions and cohesive links are somewhat straightforward and lack the flexibility found in higher bands. Additionally, minor referencing slips, such as missing articles, slightly interrupt the natural flow, aligning the response with the Band 6 descriptors for cohesion and paragraphing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating specific culinary terminology such as 'junior chef', 'head chef', and 'culinary colleges'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'formally apply' and 'residing'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and misspellings, such as 'eachother' instead of 'each other', 'reagrding' instead of 'regarding', and 'restaturants' instead of 'restaurants'. These vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it comfortably at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure with clauses like 'as I work as junior chef' and 'if I get any good opportunity'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding missing articles ('during recent flight', 'in one of the good restaurant', 'for head chef position') and preposition usage. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as 'I never worked as head chef however,'. While these errors occasionally distract the reader, they rarely impede the overall transmission of meaning, which is characteristic of the Band 6 descriptor level.
