Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I am writing to inquire about a job opportunity in one of your restaurant which is in my city.
I hope you remember me. We were in the same plane while going to Canada on last Saturday and you were sitting next to me. We talked and you suggested me to contact you for a job in one of your restaurant.
I am interested in making new dishes. I was working as a shef in my previous job so i think that is the suitable post for me.
Also, I have completed my post graduation in culinary arts management which might be helpful for the restaurant. I am keen to learn new dishes from head shef as well as I will be avialble for you at any time. Additionally, one of your hotel is near to my house so it will be helpful for you in any emergency situation.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Kruti Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the writer reminds the businessman where and when they met by mentioning the flight to Canada last Saturday. Second, the type of job interested in is clearly stated, specifically referring to the role of a chef. Finally, the writer provides reasons for being suitable, such as having a post-graduation in culinary arts management and previous experience. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal. All requirements are addressed well, and the ideas are developed logically throughout the response, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing separate ideas, and a standard closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the context of the meeting, the job interest, qualifications, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' (attempted implicitly) are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of information follows a natural narrative flow from meeting to job application, fitting the descriptors for a Band 6.5 comfortably.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'post graduation', 'culinary arts management', and 'emergency situation'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('shef' instead of chef, 'avialble' instead of available) and word choice inaccuracies, such as referring to a restaurant as a 'hotel' in the sentence 'one of your hotel is near to my house'. These minor slips show a lack of precision, though they do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, placing it at a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses ('which is in my city', 'which might be helpful') and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as lower-case 'i' ('so i think'), subject-verb agreement issues ('one of your hotel is'), and awkward phrasing ('suggested me to contact you' instead of 'suggested that I contact you'). Despite these recurring inaccuracies, the majority of simple sentences are clear, and the errors rarely impede overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
