Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mathew,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this lettter to get a job in one of your restaturants.
If you remember, we met during our recent plane journey from Toronto to Halifax. We had an interesting conversation together in which you had disclosed that you own a chain of restaurants in Halifax, given that I should contact you I will ever face a difficulty in landing a job.
Although, I am certified as a healthcare professional, I would be highly interested in working in a restaturant. Probably the role of a manager would be best suitable for me, because I have necessary skills and experience required for this role.
In Toronto, I used to work as a manager in a famous Indian restaurant called "Oh Bombay Milton".There, I have developed leardeship skills, interpersonal skills and conflict resolution skills. Therefore, I think I would be perfect for this role. I have attached my resume for your reference. Kindly, let me know if you have a suitable opportunity for me. Hoping to hear back from you soon.
Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly reminded Mathew where and when you met by mentioning the plane journey from Toronto to Halifax, identified the specific role of a restaurant manager that you are interested in, and explained your suitability by highlighting your previous experience at the 'Oh Bombay Milton' restaurant and your relevant transferable skills. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the opening paragraph. All parts of the task are well-developed and addressed logically, meeting the expectations for a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression throughout, moving smoothly from the greeting and reminder of the meeting to your job interest, qualifications, and closing call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'Although', 'Therefore', and 'There', though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical (e.g., 'given that I should contact you I will ever face a difficulty'). Overall organisation is coherent, supporting an easy read for the examiner and aligning well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary range is generally adequate and appropriate for a workplace enquiry. You successfully deploy less common terms and phrases such as 'healthcare professional', 'conflict resolution skills', and 'transferable skills'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling errors ('lettter', 'restaturants', 'restaturant', 'leardeship') and minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'disclosed' where 'mentioned' or 'suggested' would be more natural, and 'best suitable' instead of 'most suitable'. Because these lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not impede communication, the performance fits comfortably into Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional clauses ('If you remember, we met...') and subordinate clauses ('Although, I am certified as a healthcare professional...'). There are some grammatical errors, notably punctuation and comma splices, such as placing a comma after 'Although' and the run-on structure in '...given that I should contact you I will ever face a difficulty in landing a job.' Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, allowing the sentence structures and general accuracy to satisfy the criteria for a Band 6.0 score.
