Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mark,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing this to follow up on our recent conversation during our flight Delhi to Pune. We were seating together and you have asked me to reach out to you regarding some job opportunities in your restaurant.
I was exporing your website's career page and found some openings for role of manager and guest service manager. Which I believe a great match for me as per my skills and experience.
I have five years of work experience working as a service guest manager in a taj hotel. In my role my responsibilities were handling guest reservations, provide room visit, solving conflicts and manage billing for customers. By performing my duties I have enhanced both communication and managerial skills. I am confident that I would be a great fit for that role and could bring more benefit to your restaurant.
I hope you consider my experience for this role. Waiting to hearing back from you.
Regards,
Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the letter appropriately reminds the recipient of when and where they met, specifically mentioning the flight from Delhi to Pune. Second, the student clearly identifies the positions they are interested in, namely the role of manager and guest service manager, by referencing the company website's career page. Finally, the letter explains why the writer is suitable for the job by detailing five years of previous work experience in a Taj hotel, highlighting relevant duties such as handling reservations and solving conflicts. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with a polite and appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a professional networking follow-up letter, fitting the Band 7 level well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing the purpose of the communication, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the job interest, the relevant experience, and the closing remarks. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, though there are minor mechanical errors such as starting a sentence with a relative pronoun in 'Which I believe a great match for me', which disrupts the flow slightly. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business and hospitality collocations such as 'career page', 'guest reservations', and 'managerial skills'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and word choice errors, such as 'exporing' (spelling typo) and 'room visit' (an unnatural collocation for hotel duties). Despite these occasional slips and inaccuracies, meaning is never impeded, and the language used is sufficient to accomplish the communication goal, placing this comfortably at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like relative clause and multi-clause sentences detailing past responsibilities. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and preposition issues ('We were seating together' instead of sitting, 'for role' missing an article, 'provide room visit' instead of providing, and 'Waiting to hearing back' instead of looking forward to hearing). These errors persist across the response and occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader, though communication remains intact, warranting a Band 6.0.
