IELTS Writing Task 1 question
During a recent plane journey, you sat next to a businessman who owns a chain of restaurants. You talked to him and he suggested that you should contact him about a possible job in one of his restaurants.
Write a letter to this businessman. In your letter
- remind him when and where you met
- tell him what kind of job you are interested in
- say why you think you would be suitable for the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Keval,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest in one of your restaurants. I am Jahanvi, and we had a conversation about your business on the flight; I was sitting next to you last Saturday on the Air India flight.
As I know, you share information about the businesses which you have, and you are also hiring for particular locations. At that time, you also asked about me, and I shared that I also have some experience in the restaurant field, where I worked as a manager. After sharing my work experience with you, you offered me some jobs related to my background.
In addition to that, I would like to share my interest in one of your restaurants, which is quite near my location. Since you are looking for a manager position at that restaurant, I also have the same work experience, so maybe I am the best fit for this role.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my interest in that job, and I will be happy to join as per your requirements.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Jahanvi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a natural and appropriate tone. You clearly reminded the reader about your encounter on the Air India flight last Saturday, expressed your interest in the manager position at a nearby restaurant, and explained why you are suitable by highlighting your previous experience as a manager in the restaurant field. The tone is polite and professional, perfectly suited to a formal business follow-up letter. All bullet points are fully addressed and developed, and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate salutation, state your purpose, provide context for your meeting, and then transition smoothly into your job application and closing remarks. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate your introduction, the context of meeting on the plane, your specific job interest, and your closing. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that' and 'Since you are looking for' are used effectively to connect your ideas, although some phrasing is slightly repetitive, placing this securely at Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'restaurant field', 'work experience', 'position', and 'requirements'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'express my interest', 'prompt response', and 'best fit'. While vocabulary choice is generally clear and communicates your meaning effectively, some expressions sound slightly unnatural or colloquial, such as 'near my location' instead of 'in my area'. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, supporting a clear message, which aligns well with a Band 6.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and dependent clauses ('Since you are looking for a manager position at that restaurant, I also have the same work experience...'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and your sentences are easy to follow. While there are a few minor awkward constructions—for example, 'As I know, you share information about the businesses which you have'—these errors do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, representing solid Band 6 performance.
