Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
Permit me to remind you of our encounter on the 15 September 2026 where you were aboard Arik Air business class flight from Lagos to Abuja. I was seated next to you and I quickly introduced myself to you and asked for your name. You told me your name and also informed me that you own multiple fast food joints across Nigeria.
I was really intrigued and motivated by this and seized the opportunity to intimate you of my desire to seek for an employment under your establishment.
I will like to apply for the role of a manager in one of your branches and I believe with my six years of experience as a hotel manager, I am suitable for this role. I am highly resourceful and bring a good return on investment.
In my current role as a manager, I manage a team of twenty staffs and brought about key innovations in hotel administration. For instance, I led a team that initiated partnerships with corporate organizations to host conferences and meetings in our halls. Attached with this letter is my resume for for your attention.
I will be glad to discuss further with you at an interview on how my experience can bring about sustainable growth and expansion in your organization. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Saheed Lekan Balogun

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You successfully covered all parts of the task requirements. You appropriately reminded the recipient of where and when you met by stating, 'our encounter on the 15 September 2026 where you were aboard Arik Air business class flight from Lagos to Abuja.' You clearly specified the job you are interested in, stating, 'I will like to apply for the role of a manager in one of your branches.' Furthermore, you justified your suitability by highlighting your 'six years of experience as a hotel manager' and providing a specific example of managing a team of twenty staff members. The tone is polite, professional, and entirely appropriate for a business correspondence letter. Your ideas are well-developed and fully extend to meet all prompt requirements without any omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear, logical progression of ideas from the initial introduction and reminder to the statement of your career goals, specific qualifications, and final call to action. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of your message, such as the flight details, your career objective, and your professional achievements. Cohesive devices are managed well, using phrases like 'For instance,' and 'In my current role as a manager,' to guide the reader smoothly through your professional background. Reference words are handled accurately, ensuring the flow of communication remains clear, natural, and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrated a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task, utilizing appropriate business and professional terminology such as 'return on investment,' 'key innovations,' 'corporate organizations,' and 'sustainable growth.' There are occasional minor lexical awkwardnesses or slightly informal choices, such as writing 'fast food joints' instead of 'fast food establishments' or 'restaurants,' and using 'staffs' (which is technically uncountable as a plural noun in standard English, though 'staff members' is preferred). However, these minor errors do not impede communication at all. You show a good awareness of formal register and attempt less common lexical items successfully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You utilized a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your grammatical structures. Examples of successful complex sentences include: 'Permit me to remind you of our encounter on the 15 September 2026 where you were aboard Arik Air business class flight from Lagos to Abuja.' There are, however, a few minor mechanical and grammatical slips. For instance, you wrote 'I will like to apply' instead of the more standard conditional 'I would like to apply,' and there is a repeated preposition in 'resume for for your attention.' Additionally, missing articles (such as 'on a business class flight') occasionally occur, but the majority of your sentences are accurate and do not impede communication in any way.
