Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. You reminded the recipient of where and when you met, stating that you sat next to each other on a flight from India to Canada in row 7 by the window. You clearly stated the job you are interested in, which is a cashier role, and explained your suitability by highlighting your previous experience at a Thai restaurant and your desire to improve your communication skills and confidence. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to an acquaintance made on a journey. Although there are some minor gaps in development and informal phrasing, all key elements are covered, earning a solid band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You have used basic paragraphing to separate your introduction, the reminder of the meeting, the job preference, and your qualifications. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'As before I already work' feels awkward and lacks smooth connection. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'its increase my communication skills', where the pronoun reference is imprecise. Paragraphing is present and adequate for a short letter, but the linking between sentences requires more flexibility and accuracy to reach a higher band, placing this at a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but it remains basic and limited in range. You attempted some topic-related vocabulary such as 'cashier', 'communication skills', and 'restaurant', but also made noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'resturants' instead of restaurants, 'costumers' instead of customers, and 'helpfull'. Phrasing like 'make experience' instead of 'gain experience' further shows limitations in collocation. While these errors do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear to the reader, they restrict the lexical score to a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if you give a chance I will do my best'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('at plane', 'looking for the job'), tense inconsistencies ('We meet at plane'), and punctuation issues, such as missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and extra spaces before punctuation marks. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching a band 6.0, resulting in a band 5.5.
