IELTS Writing Task 1 question
During a recent plane journey, you sat next to a businessman who owns a chain of restaurants. You talked to him and he suggested that you should contact him about a possible job in one of his restaurants.
Write a letter to this businessman. In your letter
- remind him when and where you met
- tell him what kind of job you are interested in
- say why you think you would be suitable for the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally remind you that we recently shared the same flight from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie on 26 January, and you informed me about your business.
To provide some context, as I mentioned my qualifications and prior experience in the food industry, you assured me of a job in your newly built restaurant. In particular, I am a chef and have worked in multiple hotel chains and restaurants around the city.
The reason to consider me as your restaurant's chef is my productive nature, punctuality, and ability to work as part of a team during operational hours. These capabilities set me apart from rest of the candidates and make me a perfect choice for this specific job.
I hope you will consider my application and schedule a convenient day to discuss more about the job responsibilities to proceed further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Vishal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. First, the letter clearly reminds the businessman when and where they met by stating, 'shared the same flight from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie on 26 January'. Second, the writer specifies the desired job as a chef in the phrase, 'In particular, I am a chef'. Third, the response outlines suitability by mentioning relevant qualifications, prior experience in hotel chains, and personal attributes like punctuality and teamwork. The tone is formal and appropriate for a semi-formal or formal business contact, although starting with 'Dear Sir' is a bit overly distant given they had a personal conversation on a flight; 'Dear Mr [Name]' would be more suitable. However, all requirements are fully met, earning a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression and organization throughout. Information flows naturally from the initial reminder of the meeting, to the context of the job offer, to the candidate's specific suitability, and finally to the call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs for the introduction, context, suitability, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are handled effectively, such as 'To provide some context' and 'In particular', helping to structure the argument. While some of the transitions are slightly formulaic, the overall cohesion is clear and unobtrusive, warranting a solid band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'formally remind', 'prior experience', and 'operational hours' show precision and an ability to use less common lexical items. There are, however, some slight unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'productive nature' instead of 'strong work ethic' or 'productivity', and 'rest of the candidates' instead of 'the rest of the candidates'. Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly and accurately, supporting a band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'as I mentioned my qualifications and prior experience in the food industry, you assured me...' and the compound-complex sentence starting with 'The reason to consider me...'. Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, with the majority of sentences being grammatically sound. There are minor slips, such as omitting the article in 'from rest of the candidates' and a slightly awkward phrasing in 'discuss more about the job responsibilities to proceed further', but these errors do not impede communication. The control demonstrated aligns well with a band 7.0.
