Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly reminded Leo about when and where you met by stating it was during a 'flight from London to Paris two weeks ago.' You also specified the exact job you are interested in by mentioning your 'Continental Chef course' and your desire to work in the culinary department. Furthermore, you explained why you would be suitable for the position by highlighting your professional training, culinary skills, and personal attributes such as punctuality, hard work, and leadership abilities. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant ideas, demonstrating a clear understanding of the purpose and tone required for a formal or semi-formal recommendation letter. The tone is polite and appropriate throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It begins with an appropriate greeting, transitions smoothly into the context of your meeting, and then details your job interests and suitability across distinct paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your introduction, qualifications, and personal attributes. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' are utilised to connect ideas, though some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or are grammatically awkward, such as 'Nevertheless' used in place of 'Additionally'. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy for the reader to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the culinary field such as 'Continental Chef', 'cuisine academy', and 'continental dishes'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that restrict the band score. For instance, phrases like 'meet up' (as a noun), 'five stars' instead of 'five-star', 'varities' (spelling error), and 'adapted nature' instead of 'adaptable nature' show limitations in lexical precision. While these minor errors and spelling slips do not impede communication, more sophisticated and accurate use of uncommon lexical items is needed to achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional sentences like 'If you hire me I assure you...' and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'you were suggested me that' (incorrect passive voice), 'I would like you tell you' (missing preposition), 'presentation of dishes its also' (incorrect pronoun usage and punctuation), and 'with in' (spacing error). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. Although these errors do not prevent your overall message from being understood, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher rating.
