Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Jatinder,
I am writing to apply for a job in your restaurant. Recently, during our plane journey I met you and you told me about the restaurants you are having in Canada and if you remeber, we had a discussion about my career goals in future. At the end of conversation, you suggested me to contact if I wanted a job in future.
With my background in Culinary Management, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position. I would express my interest in the role of chef in one of your restaurant. As a student,
I will prove to be beneficial for me finanically in this country.
In India, I had been working as chef for almost 3 years, and require a blend of practical, mental, and interpersonal skills to succeed in a fast-paced kitchen environment. I have attached my resume for your consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your team. I am confident, I will be an asset to your team. Thank you for considering my application.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding the next steps.
Yours Faithfully,
Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You successfully reminded the reader of when and where you met by writing 'Recently, during our plane journey I met you and you told me about the restaurants you are having in Canada'. You also stated the job you are interested in ('the role of chef in one of your restaurant') and explained why you are suitable by highlighting your background in Culinary Management and your three years of experience in India. The tone is generally appropriate for a semi-formal letter, though the sign-off 'Yours Faithfully' is typically used for formal letters when the recipient's name is unknown; since you addressed the letter to 'Dear Jatinder', 'Yours sincerely' would be more fitting. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and all parts of the task are addressed adequately, meeting the requirements for a band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter is coherent and has a clear overall arrangement, divided into logical paragraphs that separate your greeting, reminder of the meeting, job interest, background, and closing remarks. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'With my background in Culinary Management' and 'In India, I had been working as chef'. However, some referencing and linking are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'As a student, I will prove to be beneficial for me finanically in this country,' where the reference to how it benefits you personally feels disconnected from your professional suitability for the restaurant. Paragraphing is generally handled well, ensuring the reader can follow your narrative easily from the initial encounter on the plane to your job application.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'Culinary Management', 'fast-paced kitchen environment', and 'resume'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'restaurants you are having' (instead of 'restaurants you own' or 'your restaurant chain') and 'remeber' (spelling error). Furthermore, the phrase 'beneficial for me finanically' contains a spelling mistake and an imprecise collocation for a job application context. While you attempt less common vocabulary, these inaccuracies prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher band. Nonetheless, your meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at structure. For example, you successfully use conditional and participial structures like 'With my background in Culinary Management, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position.' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as missing articles ('as chef' instead of 'as a chef', 'one of your restaurant' instead of 'one of your restaurants'), tense inconsistencies ('I had been working' where the simple past 'worked' would be more direct), and comma splices ('I am confident, I will be an asset'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and your sentences are generally understandable.
