Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. It was a pleasure sharing the cabin with you on an Air Canada flight.
I met you on the flight from Toronto to Vancouver on 15th of september. We had a detailed discussion about your restaurant business in Canada. We also spoke about the uncoming job opportunities and what qualities do you look for in an employee.
I would like to work for your restaurant. Currently I am working as an oparations manager in a well-renowned hotel, Hence, I would like to apply to the vacant operations lead role in your company.
I believe I am a perfect fit for this role as per roles and responsibilities we discussed on our journey. I have been working in this field from last 6 years and I have experience in handling cutomers, clients and employee all together. Moreover, I had also received the employee of the year award at my current organisation after I imporved their client retention percentage from 38% to 62%. I think due to my talkative nature and understanding of public sentiments, client focused roles naturally suits me.
Hoping for a prompt consideration.
Yours lovingly,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly reminded the reader of when and where you met, specifically stating the Toronto to Vancouver flight on the 15th of September. Furthermore, you effectively identified the kind of job you are interested in by applying for the operations lead role, and provided solid reasons for your suitability, such as your six years of experience and winning the employee of the year award. All parts of the task are well-developed and communicated with a clear purpose and appropriate semi-formal tone, meeting all task requirements successfully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter follows a clear, logical progression from the opening pleasantries and reminder of the meeting to the specific job application and supporting qualifications. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the flight details, the job interest, and the personal suitability arguments. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, using transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Consequently' where appropriate, though the referencing in phrases like 'client focused roles naturally suits me' has a minor subject-verb agreement slip. Overall, the ideas flow smoothly and the structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate and demonstrates a sufficient range for the task. You successfully incorporated less common vocabulary items and industry-specific terminology such as 'operations manager', 'client retention percentage', and 'well-renowned hotel'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, including 'uncoming' instead of 'upcoming', 'oparations' instead of 'operations', and 'cutomers' instead of 'customers'. Additionally, the sign-off 'Yours lovingly,' is inappropriate for a professional business communication and should be 'Yours sincerely'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively communicating your professional background and achievements. You successfully use relative clauses and compound sentences. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'working in this field from last 6 years' instead of 'for the last 6 years', 'handling cutomers, clients and employee all together', and a subject-verb agreement issue in 'client focused roles naturally suits me'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are comma splices and minor mechanics issues that prevent a higher band.
