Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you doing well.I am writing in order to inquire about job positions that you might have in any of your restaurants since the place i was working at before closed due to some issues.

I am sending this because we met on the flight from Canada to India and i was sitting next to you on the right side with my friend in a blue color hoddie where you told me that you have many restaurants which usually hire in all seasons. So, i am interested to join any loaction and will be ready to move.

I believe i will be a great choice for customer representative role or a cashiers since i have almost 3 years experience in same sector. Moreover,i have really strong communication skills and i am really good at understanding customers need.Apart from that i have keen interest in learning how restaurant business works so i will be ready to learn new skills. I hope you will understand my request and i will await your response.

Yours Faithfully,

Drishti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. First, the writer effectively reminds the recipient of the encounter by mentioning the flight from Canada to India and specific details such as sitting on the right side with a friend in a blue hoodie. Second, the letter clearly states interest in a customer representative role or cashier position. Third, the student explains their suitability by citing three years of relevant sector experience, strong communication skills, and a genuine eagerness to learn. The tone is polite and appropriate for a semi-formal business communication. All requirements of the prompt have been fully and clearly covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. The introduction sets the purpose of the writing immediately, while the body paragraphs appropriately handle the context of the meeting, the job preference, and the reasons for suitability. Paragraphing is utilized, though spacing could be slightly cleaner. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from that', and 'so', though there are some minor mechanical issues with spacing around punctuation marks like commas and periods. Referencing is clear throughout, and the letter moves smoothly from the initial reminder to the final call to action.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for this general training task. Functional phrases are successfully deployed, including 'inquire about job positions', 'strong communication skills', and 'keen interest'. Less common items are attempted, such as 'sector' and 'suitable', showing a satisfactory command of workplace terminology. However, there are a few minor spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'hoddie' instead of 'hoodie', 'loaction' instead of 'location', and the grammatical mismatch in 'a cashiers' instead of 'a cashier'. These errors do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively as seen in 'since the place i was working at before closed due to some issues'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, particularly missing capitalization for the pronoun 'i' and spacing errors after commas and periods. Verb tenses are generally handled well, and modal verbs like 'would' and 'will' are used correctly. While errors occur, they are non-systematic and do not prevent the reader from understanding the message clearly.
