Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am Himanshi Patel, the main purpose of my letter is to apply for a job in your restaurant. We met around 1 week ago in the plane, when we were travelling from Delhi to Canada. I was seated beside you and at that time you told me to contact you regarding job in one of your restaurants.
I have completed my masters in Hotel management. Therefore, I am interested to work in management position in your restaurants.
I think I am good person for manager because I have completed a course in that field and also did 3 months of internship in The Grand Bhagavati restaurant. This is the reason I am very much confident about my ability to manage your restaurant. Moreover, I am fluent in three languages, which is good for managing customers and employees.
I kindly appreciate your consideration in this matter, and anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well. The letter successfully reminds the businessman about where and when they met ('We met around 1 week ago in the plane, when we were travelling from Delhi to Canada'), specifies the desired position ('management position in your restaurants'), and explains why the candidate is suitable ('completed my masters in Hotel management', 3 months of internship, and fluency in three languages). The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal, fulfilling the requirements of a general training task of this nature. The ideas are clearly stated and logically developed throughout the response. Therefore, this performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, ensuring a smooth flow of ideas. Paragraphing is utilised effectively to separate different points, such as the introduction of the meeting, the job preference, and the personal suitability for the role. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, with appropriate use of transition words like 'Therefore', 'also', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the referencing and linking could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the higher bands. For instance, the opening 'Dear sir,' lacks a proper name despite the prompt providing a context of meeting a specific businessman, but structurally the paragraphing and sequencing support clear progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating field-specific terms such as 'Hotel management', 'management position', and 'internship'. There are some less common lexical items attempted, though vocabulary choice occasionally borders on basic or slightly awkward, such as 'good person for manager' instead of a more professional collocation. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication. Minor slips like lowercasing 'masters' or phrasing choices are present, but overall the lexical resource is sufficient for clear communication, fitting a Band 6.0 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('when we were travelling from Delhi to Canada') and prepositional phrases. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, for example, 'the main purpose of my letter is to apply' which is overly rigid, and 'I think I am good person' missing an article ('a'). Punctuation is generally sound, and despite the minor errors, communication is never impeded. The majority of the simple sentences are accurate, allowing this response to secure a solid Band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
