Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sonal,

I hope you are doing well. It was nice to meeting you during our recent plane trip from Montreal to Chicago, thank you for a great company and offering me to join your team in Montreal.

I am looking for a job as an assistant manager as i already have two years of experience in working as one in Tim hortons. Since i recently moved to Ontario for my college, i had to quit that job and because of being new in this city i do not have any job right now.

I believe i will be a perfect match for this position because i hold good customer service, problem-solving and communication skills. I am available to work full time from Tuesday to Sunday and willing to support company on Monday as well when needed. I am attaching my resume to this letter for your reference, please do not hesitate to reach me out if you have any questions. I look forward to hear back from you.

Kind regards

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the bullet points adequately, fulfilling the requirements for the task. You successfully reminded Sonal of where and when you met by writing about the recent plane trip from Montreal to Chicago, stated your interest in an assistant manager position, and explained your suitability by highlighting your relevant customer service and problem-solving skills. The response meets the standards for a coherent and relevant semi-formal letter. To achieve a higher level, some ideas could be extended further with more detailed descriptions of your past responsibilities at Tim Hortons, ensuring every part of the prompt is explored with equal depth and fully realized development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a generally coherent overall arrangement and follows an appropriate structure for a request letter, beginning with a suitable greeting and context, moving to the specific request, and concluding with availability and contact information. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as meeting context, job interest, and availability. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother in places. For instance, transitional phrases between sentences could be varied more naturally to guide the reader effortlessly through your career background and current employment status.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed to complete the task successfully. You attempted less common phrases such as 'perfect match' and 'customer service', which demonstrate an acceptable lexical resource for this level. However, there are some minor word-choice and formatting inaccuracies, such as writing 'Tim hortons' with lowercase lettering, using 'reaching me out' instead of 'reaching out to me', and 'hear back' instead of 'hearing back'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise and polished business vocabulary would enhance the overall lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is present throughout the letter, showing an acceptable command of sentence structures. You successfully employed complex clauses, such as 'Since i recently moved to Ontario for my college...'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including lowercase pronouns like 'i', missing capitalization on proper nouns, and comma splices in compound sentences like 'It was nice to meeting you...'. Despite these occasional errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the grammatical structures used are generally adequate for the communicative purpose of the letter.
