Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully reminding the businessman of the plane journey on 12th September, stating an interest in a chef position, and explaining suitability due to previous experience. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the mention of the previous job at Gupta Restaurant is clear, the explanation of why you would be suitable remains somewhat limited and generic, touching only briefly on customer service and conflict resolution without extending these ideas further. Despite this slight under-development, all bullet points are covered adequately, resulting in a generally relevant and well-targeted response to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, and the progression of ideas is generally logical. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the context of meeting on the plane to the specific job request, your background, and finally a concluding call to action. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition word 'Consquently' is misspelled and used rather loosely to connect restaurant experience with conflict resolution. Additionally, referencing can occasionally lack clarity, such as the pronoun 'him' in 'provide him with all the answers effectively', which slightly blurs the connection to customers. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your general message about seeking employment. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, such as 'reputed restaurant' and 'pros and cons', showing an effort to expand the range. However, the vocabulary is accompanied by some word choice inaccuracies, awkward phrasings like 'got a seating', and spelling errors such as 'Consquently' and 'September'. Additionally, phrases like 'cooking work' lack natural collocation and native-like precision. While these minor errors and slips do not impede communication, they reflect a limited vocabulary range that prevents the writing from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses connected by words like 'Therefore' and 'since'. You show some control over basic structures and verb tenses, successfully utilizing the past simple to recount the meeting and the present tense for current interests. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. These include an unnecessary article in 'a work experience', a preposition error in 'for an year' instead of 'for a year', and a comma splice error in 'For instance, If a customer...'. Fortunately, these errors in grammar and punctuation rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your main points easily.
